Charlottesville Schools Introduces Mental Wellness Days

Posted Date: 12/17/24 (2:29 PM)

Charlottesville City Schools is promoting staff well-being by adding two “Mental Wellness Days” to its academic calendar. On those days, all schools and offices will be closed to enable teachers, administrators, and support staff to take a break.

“In hearing from our staff, and as a former teacher myself, I know that it can be very difficult to find a moment’s rest during the academic year,” said Superintendent Dr. Royal Gurley. “Teachers are supporting student success not just during the school day but after-hours as well. These paid days off are one way our division can help teachers press ‘pause.’”

In the 2025-26 school year, the Mental Wellness Days will be Friday, September 19, and Friday, March 6. In the 2026-27 school year, they will be on Friday, September 18, and Friday, March 5.

The School Board approved these new academic calendars for the next two years at its December 5 meeting:

“These paid days off are set aside explicitly to give our hardworking staff a chance to recharge,” said School Board Chair Lisa Larson-Torres. “Charlottesville City Schools recognizes that staff well-being ultimately supports student learning.”

This decision aligns with two priorities in the division’s 2023-28 Strategic Plan, “Provide a Culture of Safety, Wellness, and Belonging” and “Support Our Staff.”

Other aspects of the Charlottesville City Schools staff wellness program are discounted gym memberships, mental health care coordination through Care Solace, and a Faculty/Employee Assistance Program.
